Railroads Race to Chicago: The Michigan Central vs. Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana in Porter County In-Person / Online

The railroad industry was just starting to boom in Indiana in the late 1840s when three companies--the Michigan Central, the Michigan Southern, and the Northern Indiana--began making plans to be the first and fastest route to the burgeoning city of Chicago. The race to lay tracks through Northwest Indiana became a hectic contest that played out on land and in courtrooms. Museum Curator Serena Ard will discuss the three earliest railroad lines through Duneland, their history, and the competition that helped put North Porter County on the national map.
